Member Spotlight - Shawna Alvarado

Shawna Alvarado is the CEO of O'Donnell Plastering Inc. She has been a member of NAWIC for 28 years and has worked in construction for 30 years. Shawna embodies the spirit of what NAWIC was founded upon, and has been an inspiration, mentor, and leader for so many of our members. We are so grateful for her.

Why did you join NAWIC?

I joined NAWIC because my mom was a member and NAWIC members provided me with a job! It was great exposure and an excellent learning opportunity to learn from other women!

What is your favorite memory/event with NAWIC or why do you continue participating?

Since joining NAWIC I have attended most every event (chapter, regional and National) and every time I attend I get reenergized and build connections. Those moments keep me motivated and inspired to be in this industry and lead by example. Plus I love doing things with my mom and now my daughter who is a member!

What do you love about working in construction?

I enjoy being on the same level playing ground as everyone. Every connection relating to a project from the Super, to the Safety to the PM  to the Controller is equally as important-- there is no one better than the other and we all work side by side. We are all a team and something new is happening everyday, but the best thing is to say and tell people, "we built that building!" and see the completed  project.

Anything else you would like women to know about NAWIC?

Speaking up for ourselves is hard.. but when you surround yourself with other women who have your back, it helps our confidence and our strength to get through tough obstacles that we may face. NAWIC is a safe circle! We encourage one another to get through anything that comes our way - We wont let any of us fail.. and if we do... we are all there to pick one another up and start again!
