Sara Fuentes is the Founder & President of Smart Waste, Inc. She has been a member of NAWIC for 2 years and has worked in the construction industry for over 13 years.

Why did you join NAWIC?

I wanted to learn more about the construction industry. The construction industry is one of the largest waste generators in our nation.

What is your favorite event with NAWIC?

The annual conference in Portland was everything. I've been to a lot of conferences and often times im bored with the content because its recycled... Pun intended. Dr. Rhianna Rogers and Henry Nutt left a lasting impression on the quality of speakers that are invited to the conference.

What advice do you have for Women who are new in Construction?

Just because you are new doesn't mean you aren't capable. Remind people that because you are new you don't have to unlearn bad habits from poor training. Keep your team accountable.

Anything else you would like people to know about you?

I love volunteering! I currently sit on the board of National Waste Recycling Association (NWRA) Women's Council, Chairwoman of Women in Cleantech and Sustainability, Co-host of Trash Magic! Podcast. I'm a caretaker of my 58 year old special needs Uncle. Single mom of (1) Son who is my purpose for life! I love flowers and I grow lilies and sunflowers in my back yard. I love finding treasures at second hand shops when I travel for work. My favorite thing to do is make people laugh or smile. I believe in second chances and am a living product of being giving a second chance!!!!
